He visits Sufi shrines in Old Delhi, desert fortresses in Rajasthan and the cities of Lahore and Agra, revealing a new theory about the construction of the Taj Mahal and how the Muslim emperor Akbar saw his dreams of unity end in civil war.

The series ends by considering the subcontinent's struggle for independence from British rule, visiting Lucknow to investigate a Britonwho helped found the freedom movement. Also considered are the East India Company's extensive political influence, and events leading up to partition, including the Amritsar massacre and the rise of such figures as Gandhi and Nehru.
